SUMMARY:
Jackie Joyner-Kersee Academy Teachers are experienced, passionate educators. They collaborate with the Academy Principal, staff, and parents to ensure the students receive the best education we can provide. The goal is to close the achievement gap by making the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Academy a dynamic learning environment where every child is genuinely embraced and uplifted. We offer a ratio of 2:18 with a co-teacher assigned to the classroom to ensure each child receives individualized attention.
RESPONSIBILITES:
- Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students, challenging each to do his/her best work. Provide evidence of preparation upon request by the Academy Principal.
- Teach classes as assigned, following prescribed scope and sequence. Incorporate STEAM, Winning in Life, Bible principles and Christian philosophy into daily curriculum.
- Work with the co- teacher to monitor the students and the class schedule.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity of the students.
- Utilize a variety of instructional aids, methods, and materials that will provide creative teaching to reach the whole child’s spiritual, mental, physical, social, and emotional needs.
- Keep proper discipline in the classroom/school premises providing an excellent learning environment.
- Plan broadly using semester and quarterly plans and objectives.
- Maintain regular and accurate attendance and grade records to meet the demands for a comprehensive knowledge of each student’s progress.
- Assess the learning of students regularly keeping students, parents, and administration adequately informed of progress and deficiencies, giving sufficient notice of failure.
- Develop and maintain rapport with students, parents, and staff by treating others with friendliness, dignity, and consideration.
- Attend and participate in in-services, retreats, committees, foundation and parent meetings.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, and facilities.
- Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Elementary or Early Childhood Education required.
- 2 years or more teaching experience in a school setting required.
- Valid professional educators license (PEL) preferred
- Preferred knowledge in STEAM/STEM; STEM certification recommended or willingness to obtain
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfortable using a variety of instructional devices such as promethean board.

- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Extremely effective administration of multifaced operations.
- Knowledge of best practices in education.
- Ability to identify and solve problems.
- Thorough understanding of educational laws, regulations, policies and requirements.
- Thorough understanding of instructional methodology.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Periodic sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Extended periods of time on your feet.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Required to stand, sit, and reach, and must be able to move around the work environment.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Must be able to coordinate a variety of large and small tasks simultaneously and handle tension and stress in a positive manner.
