Jackie Joyner-Kersee has found her life’s calling running foundation for kids in her hometown

I think athletes should give back to the community. Some have the idea that no one did anything for them, but if they give back, it helps the next person.

If you set the wayback machine to March of 1988, tall and sleek Jackie Joyner-Kersee, 26, the silver-medal winner in the heptathlon at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, is in the starting blocks for the 55-meter hurdles at the Mobil Indoor Track and Field Championships at Madison Square Garden. She isn’t competing in her specialty, the long jump, due to a sore hamstring, but she wants to finish strong in her last event in the indoor season with a quick win in the hurdles.
